White spots on the nails are very common, everyone suffers from it at some point in their life. We often hear that the cause of the appearance of these spots is a lack of calcium. However, this is just a myth and it is not true.
If you notice white spots on your nails, don’t ignore it and be sure to see your doctor as soon as possible. Known as leukaemia, these white spots are a problem for many people and are harmless. They usually appear as a result of small injuries at the base of the nail. White spots are caused by air bubbles in the nail and in some cases they can appear due to warts, fungus, psoriasis, eczema or as a symptom of sarcoidosis. It is a disease of the lungs, skin and many other organs. Nail beds can be injured by pinching or blowing, frequent manicures and pedicures, using gel or acrylic nails, etc.
Plummer’s toenail is a condition that indicates an overactive thyroid gland. Although it is often perceived as white spots, you may also notice horizontal streaks or ridges on your nails. It could be a sign of malaria, leprosy, Hodgkin’s disease or cardiac arrest.
Additionally, hypoalbuminemia can be indicated by two bands (low levels of albumin in the body). People who handle it should be more careful as it can indicate serious health issues. It can show that you have kidney disease, heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver, among others, or just an irregular diet.
It is often an inflammatory response to infection or injury.
Consult your doctor immediately if you notice any changes to your nails. Pay special attention if there are any changes or abnormalities in your nails.
